A room can be well thought out in terms of color and style, but still be all wrong in scale. If the scale is wrong, the entire room looks off. Keep in mind the golden mean - it will help you to see spatial relationships between objects. The golden mean basically means that everything looks good in "threes" or "thirds." For instance, a dining room table and chair set that takes up two-thirds of a rug’s surface area would be in sync with the golden mean.
The golden mean holds true with how much flooring should be showing outside the perimeter of the rug. If approximately two-thirds of the room is covered by a rug and furniture, then about one third should reveal hard-surface flooring or carpeting in the exposed areas.
